Rear brake discs on a BMW G30 530e corrode because regenerative braking does nearly all the slowing, so the rear pads rarely press hard enough to wipe the disc face clean. Surface rust then scores into the disc. One firm stop from about 40 mph, once a week, prevents it.
What is the G30 530e, and what is it good at?
The G30 is the seventh-generation 5 Series, built from 2017, and the 530e is its plug-in hybrid: a 2.0-litre four-cylinder paired with an electric motor in the transmission housing. It is very good at exactly the thing most of our customers do with it — short runs around Surrey and into London, mostly on electric, with the engine barely waking.
That strength is also the source of the problem. A car that stops using its motor instead of its brakes is a car whose brakes are not being used.
Why do the rear discs corrode on this generation?
Regenerative braking slows the car by turning the electric motor into a generator. The resistance does the work, and the friction brakes stay out of it for most ordinary driving. On a plug-in hybrid used mainly in electric mode, the rear pads in particular may barely touch the disc for days at a time.
Why the rears specifically? Under heavier braking the front discs still do most of the work, and the system blends friction braking back in whenever demand exceeds what the motor can absorb — at very low speed, or in a hard stop. The rear axle sees the least of that blending, so on a car driven gently the rear pads are the ones that never get their scrub.
A brake disc is bare cast iron. It rusts within hours of getting wet. Normally that does not matter, because the next time you brake, the pad scrubs it off. On a 530e driven gently, that scrub never comes. The rust stops being surface film and starts becoming pitting. Once it is pitted, the pad rides on an uneven face, and you get noise, vibration through the pedal, and uneven wear that shortens the life of both disc and pad.
This is not a fault. It is a consequence of the drivetrain working as designed, and it is the single most common thing we flag on low-mileage G30 530es.
How does it show up at an MOT?
The MOT tests brake performance on a roller and inspects the discs visually. A pitted or heavily lipped disc can be recorded as a defect, and badly uneven braking effort across an axle will fail. More often, the first appearance is an advisory — “brake disc worn, pitted or scored” — which is the test telling you it will be a problem next year.
That advisory is the useful signal. An advisory that appears two years running is a component wearing on a schedule, not bad luck. The tester decides the outcome, always — but a disc that has been kept clean rarely gives them a reason to write anything down. If your MOT history already shows a rear brake advisory more than once, that is the pattern, and it is worth breaking before test day rather than on it.
What does it cost if you leave it?

Caught at the surface-rust stage, the cost really is nothing: the pads clean the disc themselves once you use them properly.
The worse outcome is the caliper. A rear caliper that never works hard can seize on its slider pins, and on a car with an electric parking brake the rear caliper carries a motor. Replacing one is considerably more expensive than replacing discs, and it is a very avoidable bill.

What can you do yourself, this week?
Find a clear, dry stretch of road with nothing behind you. Get to about 40 mph and brake firmly and progressively down to walking pace — not an emergency stop, just a deliberate, meaningful stop of the kind you would make if a light changed late. Do that once, once a week.
That is genuinely all it takes. You are asking the pads to press hard enough to clean the disc face. Two other things help:
- If the car sits outside and unused for more than a week, do the same on the first drive after it has been standing.
- After washing, or after a long wet spell, make the first few stops of the journey deliberate rather than feathered.
If you already hear a grinding or rumbling from the rear on light braking, the pitting has started. That needs looking at rather than driving through.
