BMW F15 X5 40e coolant loss: the weep that looks like a top-up

Coolant disappears gradually on the F15 X5 40e because the pump and thermostat housing seals weep rather than leak. How to tell drift from a fault, and the two-minute check that catches it.

Coolant goes missing on the F15 X5 40e because the water pump and thermostat housing seals weep rather than leak. The loss is slow enough that topping up feels routine. Mark the level on the expansion tank, date it, and check again in two weeks. If it has moved, that is a fault.

What is the F15 X5 40e, and what is it good at?

The F15 is the third-generation X5, sold from 2014, and the xDrive40e is its plug-in hybrid, added in 2015 and built until the run ended in 2018. A turbocharged 2.0-litre four sits alongside an electric motor in the transmission — BMW changed which version of that four-cylinder engine went in during the production run, so if you are checking parts, go by your VIN rather than the model year.

What it is good at is the daily commute. On a full charge it will do the school run and the trip to the station without the engine joining in at all, which is exactly how most of these cars in Surrey get used.

That usage pattern is also why this particular fault hides so well.

Why do these lose coolant so slowly you don’t notice?

Because it is not a leak, it is a weep. The seals at the water pump and around the thermostat housing lose their grip gradually as the plastic and rubber age through heat cycles. Coolant escapes in tiny quantities, and much of it evaporates off hot surfaces before it ever reaches the ground.

So there is no puddle on the driveway. There is no smell in the cabin. There is no warning light, because the level sensor only speaks up once the coolant has dropped past a threshold — by which point you are well past early.

What there is, is a level that sits slightly lower every time you happen to look. Add a splash, and the clock resets on noticing.

Why does the hybrid drivetrain make it harder to spot?

Because the engine spends so much of its life switched off. On a conventional X5 the engine runs on every journey, reaches full temperature, and pressurises the cooling system daily — so a weeping seal declares itself relatively quickly.

On a 40e used mainly on battery, the engine may only run properly on longer trips. Fewer heat cycles means slower loss, which sounds like good news and is not: the fault develops over years instead of months, and stays under the threshold where anything alerts you. Meanwhile the seals keep ageing whether the engine runs or not.

We see this most on cars doing short electric-only commutes around Surrey, where the engine rarely reaches full operating temperature from one week to the next. It is the same underlying pattern that leaves rear brake discs corroding on the G30 530e — a component that only stays healthy through use, on a car designed to avoid using it.

How does it show up at an MOT?

Usually it does not, and that is the problem. The MOT is not an inspection of your cooling system. A tester will note visible fluid leaks under the vehicle, but a weep that evaporates before it drips leaves nothing to see.

What can appear is a note about fluid leaks or corrosion around the front of the engine, if the residue has built up enough to be obvious. If your test history shows anything of that kind more than once, treat it as the signal — a repeating note is a component ageing on a schedule, not a coincidence. As always, what goes on the certificate is the tester’s call.

Bear in mind the F15 40e is now old enough that every one of these cars is on annual testing, so you have a yearly record whether you read it or not.

What happens if you leave it?

The failure mode is not gradual, even though the cause is. Coolant level drops slowly for years and then, on one long motorway run on a hot day, there is not enough left to carry heat away and the temperature climbs.

An overheated aluminium engine is a different category of problem from a set of seals. Head gasket damage, warped surfaces, and on a hybrid the additional complication that the electric motor and its cooling circuit share space with all of it. The gap between fixing a weep and fixing an overheat is the widest gap on this car.

There is a second, quieter cost. Running slightly low means the system is less efficient at moving heat even when nothing dramatic happens, and the engine spends more of its time outside the range it was designed to work in.

What can you do yourself, this week?

Open the bonnet with the engine cold. Find the coolant expansion tank and the MIN and MAX marks on its side. Take a strip of tape or a sticker, mark exactly where the level sits, and write today’s date on it.

Then leave it two weeks and look again.

If the level is where you left it, you have a baseline and a clear conscience. If it has dropped, you have evidence — a measured loss over a known period, which is a far more useful thing to hand a garage than “I think it might be using coolant.”

Two things to add:

  • Check with the engine cold, always, and at roughly the same time of day. A warm system reads higher and will fool you.
  • Look at the ground where you normally park before you drive off. You are not expecting a puddle — you are looking for a dried residue, which is often the only visible trace a weep leaves.

If you already find yourself topping up more than once or twice a year, stop treating it as maintenance. That is the fault, and you have found it.
