Why does defogging your windscreen take five minutes?

Defogging is a physics problem, not a patience problem. The fix is backwards: A/C on, heat high, recirculation off. Most drivers get it wrong.

Most drivers think their windscreen mists up because the car is cold. It actually mists because their breath is trapped inside — and the button they reach for first, the recirculation button, is the one making it worse.

The thirty-second setting

The difference between a clear screen in half a minute and a five-minute fight comes down to three switches:

Sounds backwards. A/C on in winter, heat on full, recirculation off. Here’s the physics behind it.

1. The mist is you

Every breath you exhale is warm and damp. On a cold morning, that moisture drifts up and hits the windscreen, which has been sitting in freezing air all night. The glass sits below the dew point of the cabin air, so the water vapour in your breath condenses straight onto the screen — the same way a cold drink sweats on a summer day. Water vapour is invisible, so the screen seems to mist over all at once, when it’s actually been building up for minutes. It’s not the car letting you down. It’s you and your passengers.

2. Recirculation is the trap

The recirculation button seals the cabin and keeps re-using the air already inside, including every breath you’ve just taken. It feels like the sensible choice, because it warms the car up faster and keeps the cold out. But it’s also pumping the same humid air past the cold glass, over and over. Most drivers switch it on by habit, then sit there wondering why the screen won’t clear.

3. The A/C button works in winter

Air conditioning isn’t just for hot days. The system chills the air over an evaporator, and cold air can’t hold as much water, so the moisture drops out before the air ever reaches your windscreen. Blow that dried air through the heater and you get warm, dry air — exactly what a fogged screen needs. This is the step almost everyone skips, and it’s the one doing most of the actual drying.

4. Heat on high warms the glass

Warm air holds more moisture than cold air, but that’s only half of it. The real job of the heat is to warm the windscreen itself. Once the glass climbs above the dew point, the water physically can’t condense on it anymore. Cold air slowly wipes the mist away; warm air stops it forming again in the first place. The dew point isn’t a fixed number, either — it climbs with humidity, which is why the same screen clears fast on a dry frost and slowly after a rainy night.

5. Where the extra moisture hides

Your breath isn’t the only water in the car. Wet coats, umbrellas, damp floor mats and snow walked in on shoes all add moisture to the cabin air, and every bit of it ends up on the glass. That’s why a car fogs faster in wet weather than on a dry frost — and why clearing the wet stuff out of the footwell, or cracking a window for ten seconds, dumps more humidity than any button.

6. The demist button already knows all this

On most cars, the front windscreen demist button does the whole job at once: A/C on, air aimed at the screen, fresh air drawn in from outside. One press beats three dials. The rear demist is a different system entirely — it uses electric heating wires built into the glass rather than air.

7. A clean screen fogs slower

Mist needs something to form on, and a film of dust and grime on the inside of the glass gives it exactly that. A windscreen that’s clean on the inside fogs more slowly and clears faster — which is why the same cold morning is a thirty-second job in one car and a five-minute fight in another.
